So one constant I always get when I am talking to couples is “how many songs do I need to choose for my wedding”. I hate to say it depends, but it depends. But with that in mind, there are definitely some couples who feel that they need to choose the entirety of ceremony, to cocktail, dinner, and dance. And that tends to be the wrong approach for ensuring a great night of music. Part of the reason is you have likely hired a great DJ, someone who has seen the ups and downs of many events, and knows how to work the crowd properly, and by forcing the majority of the playlist can not only stifle their creativity but can also spell musical disaster for the night.
From the wedding DJ‘s perspective, it’s always good to know the music that you love and the music that you hate. But in the same token, when it comes to the “must plays” of the night a quality DJ they are going to play those must plays. Have too many and there is no room to read the crowd. You have to give the DJ some latitude to be able to read the crowd and just figure out where things are going.
I had a wedding a couple years ago and it was supposed to be all old-school hip-hop night, but I also talked to them about some other genres and everything they liked and it ended turning out to be a Grateful Dead and Phish night. It was really completely unexpected but in the same token I knew that was mus,ic they would like and it just worked with the crowd, and it was just an awesome night that nobody had expected from a planning perspective.
And that is what a quality wedding DJ will do for you. they’ll know what you like, what you don’t like, and they’ll be able to kind of read the crowd, and figure out all the parameters to make sure the night rocks.
